    The Logic of Common Nouns. [REVIEW]Charles F. Kielkopf - 1982 - Review of Metaphysics 36 (2):451-453.
Anil Gupta's slightly revised 1977 Pittsburgh doctoral dissertation is not a linguistic investigation of common nouns. There is no thorough attempt to organize and explain data about common nouns in natural languages. Gupta's goal is to develop and to defend formal modal languages and logics useful for the representation and defense of metaphysical theses on topics such as the structure of individuals, sorts or kinds, substances, and essences. He does, however, develop the special features of his formal syntax and semantics (...)

    Possible degrees in recursive copies II.C. J. Ash & J. F. Knight - 1997 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 87 (2):151-165.
We extend results of Harizanov and Barker. For a relation R on a recursive structure /oA, we give conditions guaranteeing that the image of R in a recursive copy of /oA can be made to have arbitrary ∑α0 degree over Δα0. We give stronger conditions under which the image of R can be made ∑α0 degree as well. The degrees over Δα0 can be replaced by certain more general classes. We also generalize the Friedberg-Muchnik Theorem, giving conditions on a pair (...)

Companies do have ethical responsibility and are not protected by limited liability from the consequences of their actions. A company's record and the preception of its ethics affect its reputation and ensure long term success or failure. The financial community has a history of placing moral considerations above legal or opportunistic expedients. But we are often exposed to moral dangers and the dangers of contamination are increasing. Deregulation and the technological revolution are sharpening ethical conflicts.

Basic Propositions, Empiricism and Science.C. F. Delaney - 1978 - In Joseph C. Pitt (ed.), The Philosophy of Wilfrid Sellars: Queries and Extensions: Papers Deriving from and Related to a Workshop on the Philosophy of Wilfrid Sellars held at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University 1976. D. Reidel. pp. 41--55.
In this paper I would like to explore Sellars' answers to these general epistemological questions in order to get clear about the sense in which he can be said to be in the empiricist tradition broadly construed and to ascertain what resources he has available to demarcate science from other (rationally acceptable or unacceptable) forms of inquiry. My contention will be that to the degree that one moves away from the notion of basic empirical proposition in the strong sense it (...)

  48. Sequence semantics for dynamic predicate logic.C. F. M. Vermeulen - 1993 - Journal of Logic, Language and Information 2 (3):217-254.
In this paper a semantics for dynamic predicate logic is developed that uses sequence valued assignments. This semantics is compared with the usual relational semantics for dynamic predicate logic: it is shown that the most important intuitions of the usual semantics are preserved. Then it is shown that the refined semantics reflects out intuitions about information growth. Some other issues in dynamic semantics are formulated and discussed in terms of the new sequence semantics.

  49. Mind: An Essay on Human Feeling. [REVIEW]F. B. C. - 1973 - Review of Metaphysics 27 (2):400-400.
The present volume contains Part Four, "The Great Shift," of Susanne Langer’s projected six-part magnum opus entitled, Mind: An Essay on Human Feeling. The first volume dealt with three parts: "Problems and Principles," "The Import of Art," and "Natura Naturans;" Volume II rests squarely on these three foundational parts. The balance of the work will be concerned with "The Moral Structure," and with "Knowledge and Truth." In this reviewer’s opinion, Professor Langer’s essay is easily the most significant theory of mind (...)
